We See the World in Color

My Project

I am requesting supplies needed to foster independence by giving my students the ability to express their wants and needs through color pictures. I create individualized schedules and routines for my families. I typically begin with snack items to create magnetic cards for the family fridge. The child learns to identify common items and gives him/her the ability to express what he/she wants to eat. It is easiest for parents to carry out, motivating them to continue. From there, I take pictures of a child’s daily routine. This can be as simple as the child getting in the family vehicle to go to daycare, or a detailed schedule of what the child does during the day. When a child is transitioning to the school environment, I create a Social Story of his/her visit for the parent to read in preparation for the upcoming changes. Having the memory of a fun day in a new place aids in decreasing anxiety when the change actually happens. I no longer have access to a color printer. As a result, individual picture cards are often printed in black and white. I do my best to use materials that are available, such as labels off of snack packages with reused magnetic advertisements from junk mail affixed to them. Color images are more realistic. Printing symmetrical cards with clear images creates visual order and promotes early literacy skills. Having the supplies needed to laminate picture cards and schedules will prolong their useful life.
