I see robotics as more than just playing with mechanical gadgets. Students decide what they want the robot to do, and through trial and error they figure out the intricacies of programming. Through this hands-on inquiry, the students develop knowledge as learners so that it becomes their own. They decide to analyze data, make inferences, and draw conclusions. This analysis of the problems encountered occurs naturally when students try to make the robot do what they want it to do. The K'Nex techno kit provides the ten students in the science club with an introduction to robotics (construction and programming), leading to our joining the Lego FIRST robotic competition next year with a degree of confidence. As science specialist at an inner-city school, I strive to present interesting, challenging activities to my students. It is my goal to show them that what they learn in school is not at odds with the real world. They can actually use the skills (both manual and cerebral) that they develop here when they get to junior high, high school, and the work force. By becoming familiar with programming and problem solving, my students are learning in a unique, compelling way.
