My students need a computer in the classroom that wasn't built before they were born! It's time to upgrade this Dell-osaurus and bring in modern, useful technology.

My Students
The absence of modern technology available in schools is shameful. If we are going to prepare our children for the 21st century workforce, we cannot rely on 20th century computers. We literally, and figuratively, need to get with the program.
My students are a motivated group of fourth graders.
They attend our unique K-12 school in Southern California, with a total population of about 600 kids. Our school motto is: Never Give Up on a Dream. Our school focuses on developing the whole child, teaching not only academics, but also conflict resolution, confidence building, and social awareness. The teachers strive to make our school a place where kids want to be, and are inspired to be self-motivated, life-long learners. Our test scores are on the rise, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. About 50% of my class is on the free or reduced-fee lunch program, and 24% of my students speak English as their second or third language.
My Project
I am requesting a desktop computer for my classroom for several reasons. First and foremost, our literacy, math, science, and social studies all have vast resources available on their websites. They also come with resources on CD-ROM and DVD. Our current computers are so slow, and the technology is so old, that accessing these resources is close to impossible. In addition to presenting all of these untapped resources, I would be able to present students with lessons that are much more accessible and engaging. Additionally, students will see that a computer is a tool in the quest for knowledge. I am very comfortable using technology, and I want my students to see that computers are more than just toys. They need to see the true value of modern technology in the classroom, in the workplace, and in our society.
It is an undeniable fact that we need to provide students with the very best educational opportunities as is possible.
I truly believe my students are operating at a loss without having these tools available to them. We cannot expect their best if we don't give them our best.
