My Students
A typical day in my classroom begins with my students gathering on the carpet for the introduction of our work for the day. My goal for my students is to be on grade level by the end of the year. The biggest challenge we face is our lack of up-to-date technology including a projector.
The K-8, public elementary school that my second grade students attend is in a low socioeconomic neighborhood.
The 28 multicultural children that I spend most of my day with are extremely hard working and come to school each day to do their absolute best. Although our classroom has the bare minimum, in terms of supplies and equipment, my students make the best out of so little. It makes me feel extremely privileged to be their teacher. The children have also formed a bond with each other that goes beyond the walls of the classroom. They are very helpful to each other, and the first ones to finish an assignment are also the first ones to want to help their classmates. My students are also a very "giving" group. Although most of their families do not have funds to spare, the children recently emptied their own piggy banks to help raise money for little boys and girls with cancer.
My Project
Recently through Donor's Choose, I had a document camera funded. It was a very exciting time for me because I had so many wonderful ways planned to use the camera to inspire my students to want to read and write even more than they do now. When the camera came, it called for hooking it up to a projector in order to display the documents I would place underneath the camera's light. Unfortunately, the projector I have is so outdated, it does not have a USB port for me to connect the document camera. I even tried ordering a special cable to get the projector to work, but the projector is so old, even the cable wouldn't help me. There are so many things I want to do, including projecting the pages of books on the white board and displaying wonderful pieces of writing accomplished by my students, but without a new projector, I cannot do this. With a new projector, I could use the students' own work to display all the great things they do each and every day!
Donations to this project will change the way I teach.
I will be able to project the students' own work, either for teaching a correction, or for showing an outstanding piece of amazing work. This projector will bring authenticity to our writing that we haven't had before. I also believe this projector will bring confidence to my students when they see their work being projected as an example of excellence and hard work, no matter what the subject!
