This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Nothing fosters engagement like a class discussion about a good novel! Isn't it great when students want to stay in class after the bell rings? My students are incoming sixth and seventh graders who love to read together as a class. We are an elementary Title I school in Miami, Florida that is making the transition from an elementary to a K-8 center. More than 50% of our students come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Many are English Language Learners. Our favorite activity this year was our novel study.
Since we are growing into a middle school, we do not have class sets of novels that are appealing and grade appropriate for the sixth and seventh graders.
Addressing curriculum standards through novels gives the students an opportunity to learn literary elements, and to make connections between the novel and the real world. It also gives every student, regardless of learning style, ability, and reading range, the opportunity to be engaged in collaborative learning and to contribute to the discussion. Our novel study this year fostered rich dialogues; brought students together; promoted inclusion and diversity; and improved reading and writing.
My Project
These novels will help me create a literature-rich environment for my incoming middle school students. We currently do not have class sets of novels for our middle school students. These novels will allow the seventh graders to participate in a novel study of The Call of the Wild and the sixth graders to participate in a novel study of Hoot. The novels will be used by six language parts periods. I will have three 6th grade language arts classes and three 7th grade classes next year. Students will annotate comments with post-it pads that I will provide so that every student benefits from a clean copy of the novel. Through the novel, the students will explore figurative language, vocabulary, setting, character traits, character development, plot, and theme. The class will actively participate in literary element discussions and review comprehension strategies that will enhance understanding of the novel.
The benefits of teaching language arts through novels include the following: increasing vocabulary and reading comprehension; expanding an understanding of literary elements; fostering collaboration and discourse; and increasing classroom engagement.
Teaching reading and language arts through novels will help all of my students, whether they are struggling or above grade level. Not only will students gain a deeper understanding of the text as they read and make connections, but they will also practice writing skills and communication skills.
