My Students

My classroom is full of many different types of students. This is my second year teaching, but last year I was teaching online. Working with first grade in the past, 75% of the students could read to some extent. Due to the pandemic, over 50% are struggling with reading. This is the first time in their school lives that they are going to school for a full day. With that being said, they missed out on critical learning in Kindergarten and have little stamina. I have about 5 of my kids that have special needs and receive some kind of pull-out instruction during the week. In addition to that, we are a Title 1 school. Our town is smaller and our school is just kindergartners and first graders.

Although they are low, they want to learn and are eager to please.

We are working to build a strong class and a community of learners. I want to provide each child with the same opportunity to be in a language-rich environment.

My Project

A big part of first grade is to help students with gaining literacy skills that will help them in the future. After the shutdown, many of my students did not receive the best foundational skills for reading.

The materials I have requested from DonorsChoose will not only help my students with gaining important reading strategies but will also give them books that are relevant to them.

The books and magazines will help them to know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. Also, with time they can read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
