My Students
My Middle/High School is in one of the poorest counties in West Virginia. It's very, very rural, and most of the students I teach maintain that they hate to read and rarely do. The only class sets of books we have would no doubt further this feeling: "Bleak House," "The Mayor of Casterbridge," "Ethan Frome"... you get the picture. I think our students would relate to the characters and themes of A Prayer for Owen Meany, so I would like to procure a classroom set, not only for me to use, but for the other English teachers to use as well.
My Project
This novel, with its themes of class distinction, religion, friendship, and identity will resonate with the students in this rural high school.
My daughter read this when she was in high school, and she has always said it was her favorite novel she read in tenth grade.
I'm certain that my students will enjoy this story, a much more relevant and accessible novel than the dated, old sets we have in our closet (Dickens, Hawthorne, Hardy...)
Please contribute so that I can begin to convince my ninth grade students that not all novels are really boring and impossible to understand.
