This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What a lucky lady I am! I have the opportunity to play with trains and construct with Lego's every day. Even more exciting is watching my students as they do the same because, as they build, they're experimenting, discovering, and learning! Believe it or not, cleaning up is instructional time, too!

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Pre-Kindergartener's learn through play and while playing, learn to solve problems and work with others. Children begin to embrace creativity, build foundations of leadership, and develop skills of organization. Play in early childhood is the best foundation for sustained success in school. Part of that play includes putting everything away.

My Project

Young children learn through play far better than they do in other forms. My instructional activities regularly incorporate hands-on, trial & error, sensory materials, & food preparation. No matter what we do, cleaning up is always part of the process and everyone participates. A cabinet that accommodates large bins of blocks, Lego's, train tracks, etc., will facilitate my students' ability to clean up quickly and efficiently. Aside from the obvious lessons of responsibility & accountability, putting things away properly has so much to offer! A proper clean-up requires students to sort, categorize, classify, match, think critically, solve problems, cooperate and negotiate with peers, make independent decisions, and seek assistance when necessary. It's my treasure trove of skills dream come true!

The majority of my students have rarely been expected to hang up their jacket, empty a trashcan, or put their toys away, yet most four-year-old's leap at the chance to help, when asked.

A new cabinet to store our BIG construction materials with bins in an organized format will reinforce this all-encompassing mantra: We Play & Put Away In Pre-K!
