My students need fleece and rubber balls, a bowling set, throw and catch games, beanbags, water toys, rolling pins, and ring toss games to promote physical fitness.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I wasn't particularly athletic as a child, yet spent a fair amount of time playing outside. Bike riding, hopscotch, monkey bars, and simply running around were daily pastimes. Much of that has now been replaced by video games, computer activities, and TV--all contributors to childhood obesity.
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
I incorporate nutrition, food tasting, and preparation of healthy snacks throughout our curriculum. Another component of sound living is exercise through active play. The majority of my students' homes have very small yards or no access to outdoor space at all. Trips to the neighborhood park are typically limited to the weekend. My young learners are full of energy and once in motion, just want to keep going. This is prime time to initiate healthy habits that will last for life!
My Project
Pre-Kindergarten children achieve some significant milestones in the area of gross motor development. The Fleece Balls, Playground Balls, Easy Grip and Easy Catch Balls will be used to practice catching, throwing, and kicking and will support students at different levels of skill development. The Bean Bag Flowers with Target, Rainbow Catch-a-Cups, No-Fail Froggy Catch, and bowling set will combine catching/throwing with hand-eye coordination. The 6 pairs of Platform Stilts and Best-Buy Color Cones will provide opportunities to practice balance and changing direction. Although the water toys and dough rolling pins support fine motor development, these activities are typically included in our Outdoor Center Time. They offer children a chance to relax and recharge before they're on the run, yet again!
Four-year-old's like to move and need to move.
Physical activity does more than develop muscles. It allows children to navigate in a variety of ways, control their bodies, and cultivate a zest for fitness. It also provides an outlet for their overflowing excitement that can interfere with concentration and focus during Classroom Center Time. Finally, I'd like to offer my students daily opportunities to run, throw, catch, kick, and balance they often lack at home, but truly need.
