My fifth grade students attend an elementary school in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. We are part of a diverse community filled with hard-working families, supporting their children's academic needs as best they can. Many of our families have a child who struggles with focus and attention. As a school, we focus on always doing what's best for kids! We have received many acknowledgments for the success we have achieved in meeting the needs of our students, even though we have limited resources.
Several of my students just need to wiggle while they work to stay focused!
I may be biased but I have some of the best 5th graders! Their desire to learn and be the best they can be blows me away every day. However with the curriculum becoming more rigorous in 5th grade it can be difficult for them to sit in a traditional desk and chair all day.
My Project
I have the hardest working 5th graders who are setting goals to achieve major academic goals but sometimes it can be hard to sit in a desk and chair most of the day. I plan for movement and allow students to work throughout the room but sometimes that is just not enough. I have several students who can lose focus after a very short time. Flexible seating is increasing in classrooms and I want to be able to provide this type of seating for my students, especially for my students that struggle with attention and focus.
Wobble chairs are a perfect way to offer my students a chance to wiggle while they work!
I have seen the effectiveness of flexible seating (that include wobble chairs) in other classrooms. My goal is to acquire 6 wobble chairs so that all my students can wiggle while they work at our small group table. My small group table is used several times throughout the day which would give all my students a chance to wiggle and stay focused during our group time.
