My students need a classroom library. Requested are 5 each of leveled reading books to use for independent reading, guided reading, and daily reading homework.
I teach kindergarten at a urban Title 1 school. My students are mainly minority students and students that are English as a second language learner. The students are eager to learn and try their best at what they do.
This year I would like to implement a true guided reading block into my daily schedule. I have seen how effective continuous reading on the appropriate reading level works to improve reading skills and confidence. In order to fully implement this teaching method in my class, it is necessary that I have a classroom library of multiple copies of leveled readers for my students. In addition to this, our district has mandated that each student have daily reading homework on their reading level.
The Solution to this problem would be a classroom library of leveled reading books that the students could read during independent reading, guided reading and reading conferences with the teacher. With the implementation of a reading library students would have an array of choices to read from and therefore improve reading skills, and become enthusiastic with reading, due in part to the many choices to pick from that are on their level. The resources needed would be classroom sets of leveled reading books on various reading levels from kindergarten- 2nd grade.
Reading growth can be likened to riding a bike. One can not improve unless they continuously practice - using the right materials. Just like a 5 year old does not begin on a 10 speed bike, readers too need books that are appropriate for their needs and level. This donation will greatly help to boost students' literacy development and reading skills.
