This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in Manhattan. 80% of the students in my school are eligible for free lunch. My students are not exposed to a variety of reading materials at home. Most of the families do not have books, magazines or newspapers at home.
As a first grade teacher I know that young children have an enormous interest in science. The Weekly Reader is a way to expose students to non-fiction writing in both science and social studies. There are budget cuts in New York City, so this is not something that the school can provide and most families cannot afford.
The Weekly Reader magazine is an eye-catching magazine with glossy photographs. My 2007-2008 class received the subscription through a donor and I know first hand that it builds literacy, science, historical and geography skills.
I'm asking for this donation now, so that I can have the first magazines here when school begins. It is very important for these items to arrive on time for my next group of amazing students.
Your generosity will motivate my students to become independent readers and eager learners. The subscription includes 4 big teacher issues each month that encourages class discussions. You will enable first graders to enjoy non-fiction reading!
More than half of students from low‑income households
