This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am so lucky to teach 971 lively and energetic k-5 students. About 100% of the students at my school live under the poverty level and receive free breakfast and lunch. Regardless of our circumstances my students are excited and ready to learn, but we need materials.

I am the Art specialist in a K-5 Arts school.

We are located in one of the poorest rural areas of the state. Our families are plagued by poverty and high unemployment rates. I see about 975 students every week, from Kindergarten though grade five. All of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian, and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.

My Project

I need a variety of manipulatives to help develop problem solving skills and art terms for developing basic shapes and colors. One example is "log builders" which inspire children to build forts, villages, and cabins. Another example is "design builders" in which kids snap together straight lines and curvy shapes creating fun, free-form designs and even letter shapes. Simple manipulatives will allow students to develop eye/hand coordination. More advanced manipulatives will inspire kids to use their imagination with more sophistication. Through building, my students will be developing creative thinking skills and exploring their creativity.
