My Students
Denver, Colorado is a gorgeous city with great weather but when we start school in August every year, it is WAY too hot in our brick, two-story school building. Kids can't learn when they are hot and dehydrated. We need an air conditioner to reduce the temperature in our classroom!
My students are high-spirited, smart, and hardworking 4th graders.
Most of them live in the vibrant neighborhood within walking distance of our school. They work to rigorous academic standards while our International Baccalaureate curriculum inspires them to consider how they can contribute as citizens of the world outside the brick walls of our "vintage" building.
My Project
Every year, when school starts, my students come to school nervous but eager to learn. Their enthusiasm in those early weeks of school wilts when they are asked to work in an environment where the temperature exceeds 90 degrees, even with four or five fans blowing. We keep the lights and computers off and the shades drawn to reduce heat but it is still too hot. Students have headaches and nosebleeds and become very tired in the stifling classroom. Even our interactive white board overheats.
Having a portable air cooler will make a huge difference in our classroom.
Reducing the classroom temperature at the start of the school year will support students as they begin fourth grade with its new expectations and procedures! The early weeks of school are critical and impact the entire year. I dream of having students who are physically comfortable engaging in the classroom during those first weeks of school.
