Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a public, Colorado elementary school, located in a high-poverty community. Our school is a turnaround school that has shown headline-worthy academic growth over the past few years. We work under the motto, "Happy kids learn more!" and are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure our students' success.

I work as a reading interventionist, serving students in grades K-5 who benefit from additional support with learning to read and write.

The students I work with are currently scoring in the bottom 20% of all readers in their classrooms. My goal is to accelerate their reading and writing growth, bringing them up to grade level! Since my students are reading below grade level, many of them find reading and writing frustrating tasks. I am always looking for high interest books that will engage them and make them excited about learning!

My Project

Every day in our reading intervention groups we read and write about the books that we read! Currently, we are running low on our supply of the right writing notebooks for my students' needs. We purposefully use blank notebooks that open up horizontally (which are surprisingly expensive!) so that students can have a "practice page" on the left, and a "perfect page" on the right. On students "practice pages" we work on strategies to write tricky words. Students practice saying words slowly and writing the parts they hear. They use letter boxes and make multiple attempts at writing words, figuring out what "looks right." Once they've used strategies to spell words, they write them in their neatest handwriting on their "perfect page!" This approach to instruction helps my students develop critical, foundational writing strategies AND helps them take pride in their "perfect" work!

Currently we are running very low on our supply of these notebooks.

I have been tearing used pages out of old notebooks to repurpose them for this year's students, but soon we will be completely out! We are requesting a book binding machine, copy paper, and ink so that I can create my own version of these notebooks. This will ultimately allow me to create an endless supply of these notebooks! I will also be able to customize each child's notebook before putting it through the binding machine, so if a student needs a particular resource (like a letter chart, handwriting guide, or graphic organizer) I can include it in their own notebook to help differentiate for their needs!

Your support would help a critical learning resource get into my students' hands. These bound writing books would be used daily by my growing writers! Thank you for considering our project!
