Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade at an inner city school in New York state. Many of my students are new to this country and are learning English. 70% of the students at my school are eligible for free lunch. Many come from single parent families.

Although they do not have a lot of resources, my students' parents have been generous when I've asked for supplies such as pencils and erasers. However, we have just about run out of pencils, and I have not gotten a response when I've asked for pencils this third time around. It's also the time of year when the school is running low on its stock. My students are eager to write and draw, but we're running low and will soon be completely out of these supplies.

My students' writing skills have improved so much since September. It's frustrating when the pencils break and we do not have a pencil sharpener in the classroom. Sometimes their ideas stop flowing when they wear out a pencil and our supply is running low. It can stop their thoughts mid-sentence. As we run out of pencils, we've been using pencils without erasers on the top. An eraser for each of my student groups to share would make these pencils remain useful a lot longer. The students have used small index cards for math and vocabulary flash cards. The larger (5"x8") index cards will make these much more useful. The colorful markers can be used on the index cards, as well as charts that the class and I co-create. These special markers do not "bleed" through to the other side of the paper.

Your generosity will empower my students to continue in the writing process without stopping because of broken pencils without erasers. A sharpener in a first grade classroom is a necessity. You will make it possible for them to teach each other with flash cards. What better way can a child learn than by teaching and sharing with each other? I'm asking that you please think about the importance of pencils and erasers in every subject. You can make the year flow much more easily than it would without these necessities.
