Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My first grade class is located in an inner city in New York state. 70% of the students in my school qualify for free lunch. The majority of students in my class are English Language Learners. Many of their parents read and write a different language, and my students can actually help their parents learn English. My school has students from numerous countries including the Dominican Republic, Mexico, China, Yemen and also Puerto Rico.

There are many times when I need my students to highlight particular punctuation, vocabulary, or syllables. Building vocabulary and parts of speech are critical to the success of English Language Learners, in particular. First graders often speak in incomplete sentences and the Sentence Building Learning Center will help enforce the parts of a complete sentence, as well as parts of speech.

My class needs a Sentence Building Learning Center which can be used by four students at a time. It includes 50 sentence strips and 150 color coded word cards which will enable them to create complete sentences. The words are color coded by parts of speech. My students will benefit from practicing complete sentences. The Magnetic Write and Sentence Mat will enable students to work together to write sentences and be able to erase and re-use it again! It is environmentally friendly, as it does not waste paper. The Highlighter Tape Center will allow my students the opportunity to highlight nouns, verbs, syllables, and punctuation. The tape can be used on the Sentence Mat, or on charts that we co-create in class. The high-lighting will make the critical skills stand out!

Your generosity will enable my students to increase their vocabulary, understanding parts of speech, and practice their writing skills. First grade is the basis for reading and writing and this will give my students a strong foundation needed for success throughout their school career.
