Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in an inner city neighborhood in New York City. 80% of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Most of children are English Language Learners and come from places such as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Mexico, Yugoslavia, and Yemen.

The Balanced Literacy model that we teach has the children learn punctuation as they write. One of the biggest challenges in first grade is to teach students to write complete, grammatically correct sentences. Since my population is largely English Language Learners, the students will benefit from materials than can help them learn vocabulary, spelling and grammar, resources that would never be funded without a donation.

The "I Can Build Simple Words" will help them spell and see a picture of what they are spelling. This is crucial for English Language Learners to understand what a word means. With a picture and letters to spell the word, it reinforces spelling and vocabulary at the same time. There are 50 laminated cards that can be used on both sides to push the learning to a higher level. The "Correct the Sentence Journal" is unlike anything my class has as a resource. It will reinforce punctuation and capitalization with writing activities for every day of the school year. The journal contains daily sentences, appropriate for first graders, that have grammatical errors. Students need to re-write the sentences correctly.

Your generosity will enable my students improve their writing skills. It is critical that students learn the basics at a young age, so that they can keep up with the work in the upper grades. You will make it possible for my students to improve both their reading and writing skills. The "I Can Spell Simple Words" will be used for many years to come!
