I have an amazing group of kids! They are in a self-contained autism class that offers them the individualized attention they need. They have very diverse backgrounds and learn in unique ways. The students in my classroom are mostly non-verbal visual learners. They come from low socio-economic areas in the inner city of New York. My students may not have the same access to materials as other students, but that shouldn't stop them from getting the same education and exposure to the same material.
My Project
My students don’t have access to basic school supplies. These supplies will help the students engage in this lessons. We use construction paper to create tangible items such as graphic organizers to assist the students with academic needs such as vocabulary. We also practice fine motor skills with arts and crafts during the week and the construction paper will help to engage the students in these activities. Students use dry erase boards and markers to communicate with each other. Independently or with assistance students write on the board and share their ideas with the class. These items may be basic items but they can make such a difference in our classroom.
