Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students from my school come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The majority of them are two to three grade levels behind in reading, writing, and mathematics and have struggled to catch up since middle school.

They come to my school hoping to become lawyers so that they can make a difference in the world around them.

In essence, they want to become contributing members of society, not just functioning ones. They want to learn and just need a little more support to make them better contenders in a competitive world.

My Project

This past year I taught Participation in Government. We read Stamped and the students thoroughly enjoyed it. We discussed the impact the history of race had on them as young people of color and the impact they hope the book will have on society at large. This year I would like to give my English class the opportunity to read and discuss this "not history" history book. This is such an important book for everyone to read, especially while the Black Lives Matter movement gains momentum. I like to remind my students everyday that education empowers them and I want to engage them so they can build their reading and writing skills and learn how to communicate effectively as they find their place in the world. It is our duty to arm our youth with the tools they need to make the world a better place for them and all of the generations that follow them.
