My Students
My students are part of an accelerated program and most of them are here because they fell behind in their credits at other schools.
Most of my students come from difficult backgrounds, but are trying to make the most of this second chance.
These students have faced adversity through legal and educational issues. This school is their last chance to graduate with a high school degree.
The resources at our school are limited and they are not able to be adequately prepared for post-secondary education as their counterparts at other schools.
My Project
I like to show movies and supplemental videos in my class for my students. However, the TVs we share are old and have had the speakers blown out. Consequently, the audio is nearly impossible to understand and most students get distracted with closed captioning and do not get the full experience from the video.
We also only use simple four-function calculators, more stripped than the calculator on your phone, so we are looking for TI-30X calculators, which are more appropriate for our computations.
We will use these calculators for our lessons involving percentages, taxes, and interest. The current four-function calculators we have are not capable of properly calculating interest. These are life skills I want my students to have, but without the proper materials, I am not able to give them the full experience and properly prepare them for life after graduation.
