This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an art teacher for around 971 students in Kindergarten through fifth grade and I always strive to provide my students with a variety of high quality learning experiences, no matter what age.
I am the art specialist in a K-5 Arts school.
We are located in one of the poorest rural areas of the state. Our families are plagued by poverty and high unemployment rates. I see about 975 students every week, from kindergarten though grade five. All of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian, and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.
My Project
Among the favorites and best projects my students have created in the past are those that are made out of Crayola Model Magic. This material is a clean, safe, and air-drying clay that is wonderful alternative to regular clay which has to be fired in a kiln. Unfortunately, my school is not equipped with a kiln and there is no room in our budget to order enough Model Magic for the entire student body.
When my students have a chance to work with Model Magic, they create some of the best and most creative artwork I have seen. Because of their past success, I want to keep the ball rolling which means that I am asking for Crayola Model Magic Clay once again
There are several benefits to having this material in my art classroom.
To name a few, the first is that my students can express themselves in three-dimensional forms. Next, they are always very enthusiastic and their creativity levels go through the roof! Model Magic is also a wonderful tool for building fine motor skills for children in the lower grade levels and it creates new challenges for upper grade students to tackle.
