My Students

Do you remember when you were finally able to read chapter books in third grade? Well, that's a great feeling of course for young learners! But, what's even better is having a classroom environment that promotes a love for reading; a nice library with bean bag chairs, and beads for collages.

We are a Title 1 school with many disadvantaged students who live in a very poor environment.

These students live in an area where gun violence is prevalent. However, our learning environment is conducive for the challenges our students face. We promote healthy eating habits, good study habits, and a love for reading!! We are in our third year of our book clubs, which is helping to boost learning and test scores! This is a very exciting time in our school's history! I want to ensure that my students value time for reading in the classroom. I have just moved into a new classroom that is so clean, it doesn't have any comfortable furniture left from the previous teacher. Basically, the classroom is devoid of things that would make the classroom fun. I would like to furnish a library area where my students beg for time to read! I envision my students being so focused on learning this year, that we will wonder where the time went!

My Project

My students will use the resources requested in the small library area that I have cordoned off with bookshelves. I have had the pleasure of teaching some of these talented young people two years ago. Most of them were just learning to read when I had them in the first grade. But this year, they will be third graders reading chapter books. I want to help them to be enthused and excited about reading everyday. They will be reading individually and with partners. However, their most treasured reading time is silent reading time, after lunch. My classroom is bare, and we need some bean bag chairs for comfortable silent reading! I also would like my students to create collages that reflect their imaginations of story settings. Using beads and glue, we will create collages to help decorate our classroom environment.

My students will benefit from this project in two ways: they will look forward to coming to school daily, and they will appreciate having an area to relax and read.

A colorful relaxing environment makes the classroom more pleasurable. Seeing art that they have created will help them appreciate our classroom more.
