My Project
Art is one of the key ways that many students who do not do well academically are able to show their talents, express their feelings and feel good about their final products.
Art class is a fun time for my students to observe, explore and create.
Hands-on activities are the most engaging and fun way to learn. Many students who are not good at academics shine through their artwork. Art class allows these students a chance to feel good about themselves and feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.
The students at our school are fortunate to be able to have an art class at least once every seven days. This will be their second year of having an art class. Keeping my art activities hands-on and low-risk, encourages all of my students to participate and feel successful.
However, all I was given this year was $500 from our school budget to purchase my art supplies. $500 to provide art supplies to our entire school population of over 700 students does not go very far. Since my school has about 65% of our student population on free/reduced status, it is very difficult to ask our parents to donate any additional art materials. I found that the supplies that my students used the most in art this past year were glue, Sharpies, erasers and paper.
I believe my art projects will excite, inspire, and motivate all of my students to succeed and feel good about themselves no matter what their socioeconomic background may be.
