My classroom library needs 15 new nonfiction titles that will captivate my urban readers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach literacy at a low-income, public middle school in New York. My 8th grade students are several YEARS behind their more fortunate peers. Most of them entered my class reading and writing at the fourth grade level.
Our classroom goal is for EVERY student to make two years of growth in reading, so that they are all better prepared for high school and so that they can break the cycle of inadequate education that has been thrust upon them.
To make such an ambitious level of improvement in one school year, I am teaching them to take charge of their own education. Students write their own personal reading goals and list specific titles that they are interested in reading to help them accomplish these goals. They are finding success with this approach to reading! Most of my students have already increased their reading levels!
Unfortunately, our classroom library is not currently stocked with many high-interest nonfiction books, and my students are struggling to find appealing nonfiction. Outdated and juvenile titles have deterred my students from checking out nonfiction books.
As such, I am asking for nonfiction books that will interest my students and sustain them throughout the year. This addition to our classroom will further invest students in our reading goal. It will likewise motivate them to set more challenging weekly reading goals for themselves. These titles are also perfect for reinforcing many of the "Scholars" reading strategies they will learn, and it will give them thousands of pages with which to practice.
You can give my wonderful 8th graders a lifelong appreciation for the genre of nonfiction, as well as an enduring appreciation for self-improvement. Please consider supporting our hard work and ambitious year-long goals!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
