This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are eager English Language Learners that are ready to tackle learning. Many of my students come from Spanish speaking homes and are eager to read, learn, and discuss the topics introduced in class. In order to continue this momentum we need books to feed our reading community of learners. As such, my student economic background is about over 85% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch, which means that purchasing a reading book can be more difficult than not.
My Project
My students and I need to get our hands on new reading material. Since our school has started a reading revolution, more and more students want to read but there are not enough books that grab their attention. With new reading material, students can get their hands on a diverse array of titles that they may not even know exist.
Unfortunately, due to coming from a low-income neighborhood, and not having their hands on books at an early age, this is one of the first times that students are eager to read and want to share their knowledge with those around them.
Books are something that I felll in love with at a young age and it is something that I want to pass along to my students. Not having enough books to take out makes that a difficult task. Our school budget does not allow for students to have the array of reading material that they need to really incorporate reading into their everyday lives.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
