This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second graders are amazing. They are active and eager to learn. They are curious about everything, whether it be a new word or a rogue cricket that happens to wander into our classroom. My students are bright, resourceful, and full of imagination. Our school is in a very high poverty area where 98% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Though my students do not have many resources at home, they come to school happy and excited to start the day. My second graders are always looking for new ways to play. When we discussed ways to stay healthy, my students suggested playing outside and moving their bodies as their favorite way to stay healthy.

My Project

"My favorite way to stay healthy is to play outside. I just wish we had more balls and stuff," explained on of my students. We are requesting these materials to encourage healthy habits and physical exercise. My students hope for 4 yoga mats, basketballs, beanbags, jump ropes and color cones. With these resources, my students will be able to explore different movements and will begin to learn about keeping their bodies healthy. Our school has limited physical education equipment. My second graders need the jump ropes and the scooter boards to learn how to move in different ways. They need partner parachutes and beanbags to learn about rhythmic motions. My students enjoy learning about healthy lifestyles and about how their bodies work. These materials will allow my students to learn about their muscles and how movement is essential to a healthy body. My students like playing basketball as one of their PE activities, but the school basketballs are too heavy. We have no yoga mats or cones.
