We Need New Diverse Books for our Classroom Library
Help me give my students these books, which represent diverse populations, providing my students the opportunity to see characters like themselves in literature.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to our school to participate in the gifted program from several different schools across our district. Our school has a 54% free and reduced population and is ethnically diverse. Many of the students speak a second language at home and have parents who immigrated to this country from across the globe.
If my students had all these new books for their classroom library their passion for reading could be better maintained.
When I started teaching I inherited a lot of books, however most of these books were at least 15 years old, and really showed their wear. I have begun purging these old books, because I have noticed the students aren't interested in reading them. I would really like to replace them with new titles, which my students will be excited to read.
Our district has not funded school libraries for several years, and I do not receive money to purchase books for my classroom library. However, my students deserve the chance to read the newest titles and see themselves in books. This is what I strive to offer to my class through a robust classroom library.
My Project
These books will give my students the chance to find wonderful books to choose from in our classroom library during their independent reading time. Of course, I always allow the students to take the books home to enjoy in the evening and on weekends. Independent reading of books of their choice, is of utmost importance, if students are to become lifelong readers.
I teach students of a variety of backgrounds and thus look for diverse books to represent my students.
I teach 4th grade, yet my former 5th and 6th grade students like to stop in and see what new books I have found. I always allow even my former students to check out books for their enjoyment. I hope to be encouraging lifelong readers and need good quality books to do so.
