My Project

Our school is not providing modern, diverse literature for our students. We have not had a librarian since the 2019-2020 school year. The former librarian was in the process of spearheading a digital catalog which led to the removal of at least 90% of the physical books our library had, and the digital catalog has fallen to the wayside--it's no longer available to teachers or students to use. Therefore, we have little books to offer students to read outside of textbooks, a few classic novel sets, and personal teacher collections (I have approximately 30 books in my personal collection to offer my students).

My students deserve better.

How can I expect them to become readers without providing literature representing various genres, cultures, and voices that may appeal to them? My students don't have the means to either buy their own books or get transport to our public library, so I feel it is my responsibility as their teacher to expose them as much literature as possible. More than anything, I want to see books in their hands and see them enjoying stories I know they'll love. I've tried to create a list of titles that are modern and that represent different reading levels, genres, and diverse authors to begin building my classroom library.
