We Need Multicultural Young Adult Novels

Help me give my students a larger classroom library to choose from. With a greater number of young adult and multicultural novels in my classroom, I hope to spark an interest in reading in even more students.

My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. The county is comprised of very affluent families but also very economically disadvantaged families. The students represent various ethnicities and nationalities. Additionally, many of our students come from military families as we live in an Air Force town. Our school is Warner Robins, GA, a mid-sized city. Here I teach American Literature and a Reading and Writing study skills class. I am currently enrolled in a reading endorsement program to help students increase their reading comprehension and fluency.

Because my American Literature team teaches a diverse group of students, our instructional approach must be engaging, differentiated, and research-based.

My team has a goal to raise all of our students' lexile scores and achievement levels. We focus on student-centered learning and project-based learning. We try to provide authentic experiences for my students so that the skills they practice in my classroom align with the skills that they will need outside of the classroom.

My students are eager to learn. They get excited about the projects we complete in class. With the assistance of donorschoose.org, we can accomplish even more within the four walls that mean so much to me.

My Project

These materials will help even more students access high interest and culturally relevant novels. I hope to help students find novels that will encourage them to read.

My students have shown passion and excitement for reading when they have read high interest and culturally relevant novels in the past.

Recently, my students read "Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds. One student remarked, "This is the best book I have ever read!" I hope to build off of their excitement about this novel and introduce a bigger classroom library.
