My school is comprised of a population that is economically disadvantaged.

All students receive free breakfast and lunch. Assault, weapons, and theft are all serious offenses that my administration has to deal with each year. Regardless, each morning, 30 (yes, 30) smiling faces arrive in my kindergarten classroom ready to learn. Every fall, new minds are eager to jump into their first year of school. In the city of Philadelphia, it is always hard to create a classroom environment that includes all of the necessary tools needed to teach. Due to the city's deficit, obtaining basic school supplies is virtually impossible. From pencils to paper, text books to journals, teachers are responsible for providing these items each year.

My Project

Teaching kindergarten, a time in students' lives when reading is so vital, my focus has turned to our classroom library. Because my students are so eager to explore new books, it is my hope to fill our library with items that spark the imagination, aid to comprehension, and hold interest for those just picking up a book for the first time. Sadly, many of my students do not have many, if any, books in their home. My classroom collection not only allows students to read while in school but also, borrow from the "Lending Library", so that their love of reading continues outside of our classroom walls. My students need a collection of Mo Willems books.

This project will aid to students understand, appreciation, and love for reading.

Having a set of books by a man who had the ability to add humor to his books keeps my students coming back for more.
