I'm a second grade Special Education teacher in Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school and approximately 84% of its students receive free lunch.
Every week, my students borrow seven books from the classroom library to read throughout the week at home.
With 25 students in my class, that means that at any given time 175 books are checked out of the classroom library. My current supply of books is over eight years old and has seen some serious wear and tear due to this constant use!
My Project
Due to the limited funding for basic supplies in my school district, new books to supplement my classroom library are not possible.
As a Special Education teacher, I strive to incorporate literature and reading activities into my classroom as often as possible. An assortment of paperback fiction and nonfiction books from levels A-K (kindergarten through second grade reading levels) would be a wonderful way to make this goal possible for my students, particularly those who are struggling with reading. I am requesting two copies of each set of books to grow the size of my library and create opportunities for paired reading between students.
With these new additions to the classroom library, my students will be able to continue to borrow high-interest books from the classroom on a weekly basis.
By helping to place books into the hands of my students, a lifelong love of reading will be fostered.
