My students need math manipulatives and materials, such as fraction and number tiles, flash cards, place value cards, fraction circles, factor triangles and math software.
My job, as a teacher, is to give my students the tools they need to make progress on their educational goals. When I can give them engaging activities, they are active learners.
My students are in a self-contained middle school special education classroom for students with a variety of disabilities that make it difficult for them to access their grade level academics.
Each child has an individual education plan to help them make progress on goals in academics, social skills, communication and functional life skills. About 1/3 of my students speak English as a second language and every student works significantly below their grade level in all academic areas. My students are very hard workers and try their best to grow and learn in every subject. They are full of curiosity, energy and incredible potential.
My Project
My students need to gain mastery in complex math concepts. By adding math manipulatives into my classroom, I will be able to implement hands-on learning experiences with my students as I teach the lesson. Then, to practice in small groups, the students will be able to rotate through stations, using manipulatives at many of them. This mastery through interacting will then produce a higher level of learning and understanding. Through the use of these math manipulatives and materials in hands-on activities and learning stations, my students will get a more thorough understanding of these math concepts. My students need fraction and number tiles, flash cards, place value cards, fraction circles, factor triangles and math software.
We try to always focus on the positive and celebrate every success that our students achieve.
Every day we do our best to make sure that our students have the necessary tools they need to succeed, but it's not easy when you have a small classroom budget per year in a high poverty school. I would love to give them all access to hands-on math manipulatives to enrich their educational experience and help them maximize their learning.
