Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic," Arthur C. Clarke said. Printer ink is the magic my students need to learn. Without a proper supply of ink, my students will not have the worksheets and handouts that help them understand and practice classroom instruction.
My students are great!
They are excited to learn. Most of my students are first or second generation immigrants from Mexico. Many of my students are still learning to speak and read English. Almost all of my students are living below the poverty line and are frequently unable to afford basic school supplies like pencils and folders. The school is part of a large urban district that has experienced huge budget cuts in the past couple years. Despite these challenges, my students love coming to school, and we have some of the highest attendance rates in the city.
My Project
In order to best meet the individual needs of my students, I create many of the handouts and worksheets I use for instruction on our classroom computer. Moreover, the budget at my school does not allow us to purchase expensive individual workbooks and the families at my school are unable to afford them. My students need ink so that I am able to print handouts, games, worksheets, and other materials to guide instruction. The printer in our classroom also acts as a copy-machine and allows me to quickly make copies of lost permission slips and last-minute activities. It gives me the flexibility to quickly respond to the learning needs of my students. With more than two hundred children attending my classes every week, we have quickly exhausted our printer ink supply. We need your help to purchase this essential resource.
Being second language learners, living in a low-income area of a large, underfunded, urban school district, my students have few advantages.
However, with your help, a strong education will give my students the tools they need to reach their dreams.
