Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are nothing short of of amazing! They are bright, curious, and love to learn. I serve 8th graders in junior high who are at a tough age where they are beginning to learn about themselves and where they fit into the world.

My students are so eager to soak up as much information as they can.

I have worked hard to create a culture of readers in my classroom. I love hearing my students talk to me about the books they read. They are always so excited to share the new adventure they went on, or the drama that unfolded as they read! I want to continue to inspire my kids and continue to develop their love of reading.

My Project

"Books are like amusement parks and kids gotta be able to choose the rides." - Kwame Alexander

Reading builds vocabulary, empathy, is a medium to freedom and has the ability to connect the reader to the outside world.

Independent reading also encourages critical thinking and prepares students for the rigors of college and career.

All of these books will be added to my classroom library to create a diverse selection of books so that I can continue to build a culture of reading in my classroom. I want my students to be exposed to literature that mirrors their life experiences and values. Literature that is written BY people who look like them. Literature that is written ABOUT people who look like them. I want them to be able to see themselves and their own life experiences in literature.

I also want my students to read literature about people and experiences they know absolutely nothing about. This will help students to see that there are so many different people and experiences in the world!
