Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Recently our school was able to purchase 30 Chromebooks for my classroom to enhance our students' access to the educational opportunities on the Internet. There are times when I would like to assign a lesson that involves sound, so we need headphones so that they can listen and learn.
I teach in an inner city public school which serves to 95% free-reduced fee lunch students.
Our school is about 70% African-American, 25% Hispanic, and the rest made up of other ethnicity's. It is a challenging school environment, but we have seen some recent successes due in part of us having more advanced technology. However, the funding has run out. We are facing severe cutbacks in our state's educational budget. So I am asking the DonorsChoose.Org patrons to help fill the gap.
My Project
There are many great educational services on the Internet. These include Ted-Ed, United Streaming, YouTube among many other sources. We even have created in-house videos for our students to use. Many times, I am able to play the videos for my students, but there are times I would like to assign them to watch a video, take notes, and do learning activities on their own. These headphones would allow them to work at their own pace without disturbing other learners. For example, I could assign them to watch a video on Shakespeare's stagecraft. At the end, there would be a quiz they could take that would assess how much they have understood and learned about The Globe Theater. The headphones would help them to adapt the presentation to their learning style and speed.
These headphones would add a new dimension to my students' learning opportunities.
Students do not learn the same way I did when I was in their place. We live in a visual/aural culture. PBS and The Discovery Channel have taken advantage of this. I would like to do so also to meet the multiple learning styles I have each day in my classroom.
