My Students
As a Title I Literacy Specialist and Reading Recovery teacher, I work with our most at-risk 1st grade readers. Most of my students enter the classroom on the first day of school with a limited literacy repertoire and very little confidence. They are at the point in their schooling where they may recognize that they have more difficulty reading and writing than their peers do.
Many of my students tell me in our first encounter that they "hate writing!" It has become routine to write this statement down and date it, so that I can excitedly count down the days until I hear, "I love writing!" This is because I have come to learn that "I hate writing" truly means that reading feels too hard.
I have embraced that my job is to make writing feel "easy"!
My Project
When students WANT to write they are willing to take more risks. My students all enter my classroom as struggling readers and writers but I want them to leave as confident, and strong readers and writers! I have found that an effective way to get students motivated about writing is to have exciting writing materials and an array of surfaces for them to write on.
It is much more exciting to practice writing unknown letters and words on a magna doodle board or on rainbow paper!
During the writing portion of our lesson, I allow students to write in a marker of their choice, but they always tend to reach for my pen! Having glitter gel pens in an assortment of colors will get them pumped up to write! The oil based pens included in this project will allow students to decorate "word rocks" to place around the room for practice! Paintbrush pens will allow students to write in a smooth motion, and that movement will help them to remember more words. These materials will put a smile on my students face EVERY time they write! My goal is this will allow for more experiences where students feel that writing is "easy!' I have even included an Easy Button in this project so students can push it when they feel they now know a word easily!
