This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Mathematical concepts and thinking can be difficult for many students. What is even more difficult is to try to learn (and teach) mathematical skills without engaging materials. Since math is all around us, my students need materials that will motivate them to welcome and explore mathematical concepts.
Our students are members of a heavily impoverished, low-income community.
Our classroom is an integrated, co-taught classroom with a special education population, many with academic and emotional needs. They have been making the transition this year towards the new Common Core standards of learning and struggle with mathematical concepts.
My Project
I am requesting grade level math workbooks (for grades 3-4) , various math activity centers, and hands-on math materials for my students to use as tools and resources that encourage more levels of student proficiency. These resources supply multiple activities and lessons that are engaging and will support student and teacher cooperation and comprehension of new standards of learning. These resources also provide leveled activities to address the differentiated needs of students with mixed abilities while still meeting state standards.
A common frustration for teachers is the lack of resources or materials when asked to modify and adapt to new practices.
These materials will serve as a way to ensure that my classroom will have materials and a source to meet the needs of the Common Core standards and the individual needs of students with hands-on learning.
