Help me give my students diverse books to include in our library such as The Day You Begin, Glow, Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story and We Are Water Protectors just to name a few.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The scholars I teach have so much potential and it's my job to help them achieve it. The majority of our students are from low socioeconomic and ethnically diverse backgrounds. We are an urban school that serves grades preschool through 8th and is limited in funding in all areas. My second graders are determined, spunky 7 -8-year-olds. They are eager to learn new things and want to share all their thoughts and ideas with me and their classmates.
My Project
There are disparities in the representation in our classroom's library. I want to include more meaningful reflection and dialogue amongst my students. By receiving these pieces of literature, I can expand our library. This will enhance their critical thinking skills, as well as being able to relate to some of the characters. My students will be able to see themselves in some of the themes and learn from the cultures of others.
The children's books will be a powerful tool for my students, as we continue to have conversations about race, diversity, and acceptance.
