My Students
I want each and every one of my students to know that they WILL achieve their dreams. Each day in and outside of my class is an opportunity for my students to be artistic: unleash their creative emotional power that will not merely create aesthetically pleasing masterpieces, but inversely allow them to accelerate in other academic disciplines, such as math and reading. I want to create an inquiry-based space where my students can examine and reexamine fundamental ideas and texts that shape American society: moreover, a safe space where students are not afraid to ask questions, but acknowledge it as a celebrated phenomenon (i.e. a realization that they can only learn via the virtue of asking questions). I also strive to promote advocacy and equity for my students. My kids will NOT be a statistic. My kids are results oriented, college bound students that will defy the achievement gap. Thank you!
My Project
In a vibrant, multicultural society, representing the richness of students’ lives in a class or school library takes a conscious effort. Including writers and fictional characters with a variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and life circumstances is a way to
increase the chances that students will find both windows and mirrors in the library in books that reflect their lives, and ones that give them insight into the lives and experiences of people who aren’t like them.
No book shelf is going to represent the fullness of this nation. From the descendants of people who arrived here more than 15,000 years ago to the newest immigrants, we’re simply too much. But the inclusive set of books below—many of which were recommended by multiple teachers—
We hope they reflect human diversity in the broadest sense, addressing race and ethnicity, religion, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, and other special circumstances.
