My Students
I’ve been blessed with a teaching career surrounded by middle school students. Their energy and puppy-like awkwardness make for an exciting and interesting day that is always different from the next. In a sixth through eighth-grade middle school, my seventh-grade students are at a unique point in their academic career. They have a year of experience, yet another year still full of wonder, giving them the perfect mixture of confidence and curiosity.
As a seventh grade ELA teacher, my classroom is the melting pot of readers and writers.
My students come from different learning backgrounds and have many unique learning styles; however, they are all seeking adventure and looking to escape the ordinary day-to-day. My students are on the hunt for awesome ideas, friends, role models, and inspiration to make life (and school) fascinating!
My Project
Everyday my students make time to read. They read during class and make it a goal to read at home. My students are free to choose their books and have the right to abandon them if they aren't the perfect fit. Since middle schoolers are constantly trying to figure themselves out, they are continuously going through book after book until they find one that speaks to them.
It is important for all students to see themselves represented in our classroom library, therefore we need more diverse books.
This list of books we are asking for feature characters of color. For the month of February, Black History month, we will be book talking books with characters of color. These book talks lead to great discussions about the challenges the characters are facing. We will also speak about the authors and what they have accomplished as writers and what ideas or experiences inspired their work. Students will be given the option to read in book clubs, therefore it would be great to have more copies of these books.
Every classroom should reflect the students who sit in them everyday. We need our classrooms, and libraries, to represent their interests, their goals, their identity, and their environment. These diverse books will be fantastic additions to make them feel seen and heard.
