Help me give my students diverse books for our classroom library! We need more representation for students who are Latino, LGBTQ, and students with disabilities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds at a school where over 90% students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Families come from all over the world, and kids come to class in various states of readiness to learn. All want to learn, and love to learn. Not all are well represented by the books in my classroom library.
My students love reading and need more access to diverse books in the classroom.
Many have limited access to books at home and need to see their lives reflected in our literature in the classroom.
My Project
Books can be mirrors- reflecting a student's life and self back to them. They can be windows- allowing them to see and imagine lives and circumstances other than their own and they can be doors- allowing kids to change their thinking by stepping into the story of another person.
We need more diverse books for my classroom library.
Specifically, we need more books representing contemporary Latino, LGBTQ, high poverty, and characters with disabilities. I have selected books that will grow my classroom library in all three areas.
All of the kids in my classroom should be able to see themselves and their classmates in our classroom library. These books will help make that happen!
