We Need Diverse Books and Characters!

Help me give my students engaging books with diverse characters, families and emotions who look, feel and live like them! When they see themselves in books, they are excited to read, connect with and learn from these characters!

My Students

My students are curious, creative, enthusiastic movers and shakers who are interested in and excited to learn about the many wonders in the world around them. As one of a handful of alternative schools in our large urban district, our school is often sought out by families who are looking for a different approach to learning for their students. Our students often "think outside the box" and don't often fit the typical "color within the lines" student profile.

They are active learners who are vocal and kinesthetic, kind and inquisitive; who like to talk, share and move in our warm school community; and who love to learn in a hands-on way, by doing.

In our classroom, we work intentionally to be inclusive and welcoming of all members of our community and all the people we meet, and integrate social-emotional learning along with our academic learning every day!

Our school uses a yearlong, project-based approach to learning called "expeditionary learning" which encompasses academically rigorous learning in a specific topic area in a hands-on, project-based and integrated way. Students find this approach to learning highly engaging and enjoyable; they truly have a zest for learning and give their efforts 110%!

My Project

More than ever, students are struggling with issues of loneliness, too much screen time and working so hard to learn in ways that are not developmentally appropriate, given the current pandemic. Listening to great stories with characters who inspire is a welcome respite from the many other challenges right now!

We need more highly-engaging books with diverse characters, families and emotions who look, think and feel like us; the favorite time of day for all of my first graders is read aloud, which I try to fit in 3 times during most days!

Learning about and from such characters and the many struggles and triumphs they face, big and small, inspires students to do the same and to want to read more great books independently!
