This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"But teacher, what should I write on?" It's a question asked time and time again in my classroom. Engaging students during read alouds, centers, math games, and other activities would be easier if each of my students had a clipboard to hold their papers as they move about the classroom!

I am very fortunate to teach an enthusiastic, motivated class of 30 first graders.

Our school is located in an impoverished urban community in Illinois. As a result, all of my students qualify for free lunch, and families have little money to purchase even basic school supplies. With school budget cuts tighter than ever, there is little funding for classroom essentials. Despite the economic obstacles these children and our school face, my students love to come to school every day, and they are respectful, hard-working, and eager to learn.

My Project

My students and I would love to have a class set of clipboards for daily classroom use. During our reading lessons, I often ask students to respond to a book I read aloud in writing. Students focus much better when sitting close to the book on our rug, but that means they do not have a hard surface on which to write. If each child had a clipboard, however, each child could easily write while seated on the rug - or anywhere else in the room. This would make classroom management and assessing students easier as well. During writing, my students like to get cozy and really focus on the stories they are telling. Without clipboards, each student must sit at his or her table, which does not allow for getting very cozy at all! Being able to move to a comfortable spot will allow students to focus on their writing. Completing science experiments, observations, and other activities will be far easier as well when students can move about the classroom instead of being stuck at their desks.

Teaching is my passion, and I strive to provide my students with all the materials they need to be successful.

A simple tool such as a clipboard may seem trivial, but it can help make each child a better learner. Your support of this project will not only help enhance my classroom instruction, but it will also give my students crucial learning opportunities.
