Skipping what is universally referred to as the “most important meal of the day” sets the tone for student performance throughout the day. Students who skip breakfast are likely to become tired because their brains are low on fuel. I want my students to be topped off with "fuel" and brain power.
I have seventeen students in my first grade regular education class.
Our school is located in a low socio-economic school district in Oklahoma. My students are full of life, love learning, but sometimes they do not have the proper nutrition required to maximize their daily learning, this is why I have chosen to "FEED USA", starting with my students first.
My Project
My students need a compact refrigerator/freezer for our classroom. Many of my students do not have adequate food in their homes, needless to say a healthy breakfast is out of the question most mornings. Our school lunch program does serve breakfast. There have been many of days where my students are full after eating lunch, but they have fresh fruit and vegetables they would like to save for a later snack. Instead of throwing these items away, they could put them in our classroom refrigerator. We could also store "healthier" snacks with a refrigerator. Parents could send fruits, yogurts, cheeses and vegetables instead of cake snacks and cookies.
By providing a refrigerator for our classroom, you will be providing the equipment necessary to help children begin the school day with a healthy meal, and will provide them with the opportunity for a brighter future.
By supporting this project, you will also help provide resources necessary to preserve fruits, vegetables and dairy products for a continued healthy eating throughout the afternoon!
