Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Kindergarten teacher it is my responsibility to make sure that my students learn various math concepts. I must teach shapes, colors, sizes, measuring, patterns, numbers, counting by ones, fives, and tens to 100, matching, directionality, etc. I also need to include literacy to our math curriculum.
This is where my problem comes in. I managed to get a series of books for counting the numbers, from one to 10. But, this is not enough. Many of the books I find are to difficult for the students to grasp the concept. I create my own poems, and short stories to assist the students in understanding various math concepts.
I know that if I have the literature to assist me in teaching math, both my students and I would not struggle through the connections of literacy in our math program. The "Math Start" collection is a series of readers that teach students with wonderful pictures and words. The colors are vibrant and the stories challenge the students. I feel that with one book for each math concept it will help our classroom increase our math potential.
Students at this age learn with visuals, through read aloud, and through practice. I would like to teach math one year without the worry of where I will find the appropriate book to relate to the topic I am teaching. Children at this age love to hear stories and learn best from a good story. Role playing parts of the story is also good for comprehension. Please assist me in developing a strong math foundation in my students NOW so that later it is not such a difficult subject. Thank You for your assistance and for joining our math program.
