My students need leveled books so that they can learn to read.

My Students
My first graders love books! Many of them don't have access to books at home, so it is essential that our classroom library be well-stocked with books on their levels.
I'm a first grade teacher in Brooklyn.
My school is a Title I school, and approximately 84% of its students receive free lunch. The neighborhood contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there. Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.
My Project
Every week, my students borrow at least 7 books from the classroom library to read throughout the week at home. With 21 students in my class, that means that at any given time 140+ books are checked out of the classroom library. My current supply of books is very limited and the books that I do have are over six years old and have seen some serious wear and tear due to their constant use! Due to the limited funding for basic supplies in my school district, new books to supplement my classroom library are not possible. These sets of Level A-C fiction and nonfiction books will provide my students with the books they need to become stronger readers.
With these new additions to the classroom library, my students will be able to continue to borrow high-interest books from the classroom library on a weekly basis.
By helping to place books into the hands of my students, a lifelong love of reading will be fostered.
