This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are behind in reading. Very behind. They need to catch up to their peers and fast! In order to catch up, they need extended reading practice and lessons with books that are on their levels. And that's where I fail them... I don't have enough lower level books for my readers.
My students are incredibly challenged, mostly Hispanic or African American, from a highly economically- and socially-challenged neighborhood in NE Denver.
They have a great deal of behavior issues and most are more than a full year behind academically. My goal for these sweet, innocent kids is to help close the achievement gap that these students face every day, to help empower them to be lifelong learners and high achievers.
My Project
I am requesting book sets that are leveled by skill and ability. Students use these leveled books to practice fluency on their own level, or work on a level above theirs to practice applying strategies to problem solve words and comprehension. It is incredibly difficult to find books on these levels and ordering them from a teaching store is pretty much the only way to get books on the PreK and K level that I need for my First Graders to work with.
This is a real essential project for my class.
We absolutely need leveled books in order to teach and learn, and I don't have the volume that I need to support the high number of below-grade level readers I am working with. I hope you'll find it in your heart to help these young readers with a donation! Thank you for considering us!
