My Students
After sixteen years as an English teacher and Professional Developer, I started in 2018 at a new school in a new content area. My school is a medium-sized high school in a large, underfunded urban district that serves a high poverty student population. Over the course of each school year, I teach approximately two hundred students in grades 9 through 12.
Our school doesn’t have many existing resources for art instruction, so we need help in order to set up and maintain a classroom that will provide a framework for success for all students.
I want to give my students the classroom and the materials they need in order to build their art, technology, and literacy skills as effectively as possible. We need as much help as possible to do the best work possible!
My Project
My school is located in a high needs community where our budget has been locked because we are closed for in-person learning. My art students do not have access to art supplies at home. Many of their families are experiencing extra financial hardships due to the ongoing pandemic, and they cannot afford to purchase supplies for art class. I want to be able to teach these enthusiastic students the drawing and painting skills they are excited to learn while I am teaching online during this quarantine situation. This project would provide students with pencils, paints, paintbrushes, sketchbooks, drawing books, scissors, glue sticks, and other supplies they need.
I need art supplies and drawing books I can distribute to my students at home so they can learn art skills while we are in our virtual classroom during the quarantine.
Not only are these skills part of our curriculum, but there are many social and emotional learning benefits to being able to express oneself through art. Without these hands-on supplies, we are limited to learning about art history and contemporary artists because students do not have the necessary materials and our school budget remains locked, meaning that the school cannot help provide these things. I want these supplies for my students so that I can add practical art skill-building to my students' online learning experience. Without these supplies, students cannot engage in the hands-on portion of our class.
