My Students
My art classroom is a key place in our school for my students to decompress and develop their art skills. Art helps them express themselves and helps them deal with their emotions. Art in and of itself is a great tool for students' social and emotional learning. Because our school was suddenly moved to a virtual platform, my students moved online without access to any of the supplies we had in the classroom. Because our school serves a high need community, most of our students do not have access to art supplies or technology at home. Most are completing their online assignments with only a school-provided smartphone.
Most of my students are not currently engaging with online learning because they have unstable home situations, hold jobs to support their families, have younger siblings (or their own small children) they must care for, or do not have access to the technology and materials they need to be successful.
Many of those I have spoken to are struggling without their usual school-based support networks, and they are frustrated that they cannot complete assignments and engage with their peers.
My Project
My school is located in a high needs community where students do not have access to art supplies at home. Many of their families are experiencing extra financial hardships during this pandemic, and they cannot afford to purchase supplies for art class. I want to be able to teach these enthusiastic students the drawing skills they are excited to learn while I am teaching online during this quarantine situation.
I need art supplies and drawing books I can distribute to my students at home so they can learn art skills while we are in quarantine.
Not only are these skills part of our curriculum, but there are many social and emotional learning benefits to being able to express oneself through art. Currently, we are limited to learning about art history and contemporary artists because most students do not have necessary materials. I want these supplies so I can add practical art skill building to my students' online learning experience. Without these supplies, students cannot engage in the hands-on portion of our class.
